Finished watching “A Quit Place”. It was a very good movie. The tension that built up at the beginning, the development of the characters, the foreshadowing, and the world building were fantastically portrayed.
(SPOILERS AHEAD) However, a few things still bugged me. First, let me say that I love movies where the ‘heroes’ can win if they learn and follow the rules. I don’t want to watch movies where the hero stabs the villain in the heart, only for the villain to get back up again. So plus on this movie for doing that. But, in a world where the monsters hunt sound, I would have devised more ways to lure them away from my home. Also, I would have moved my home closer to something that produces noise (IE: waterfall). So they first introduce these creatures when they attack, and Take the youngest son. They literally pop out of the woods, grab him, and run. Later in the movie they hear a noise, go to the noise and when the noise is stopped, they keep walking around the area. Are you trying to tell me that there are no other noises in the area that they then want to go on to check on? The whole implant/hearing aid idea was good, albeit simple. It was however, poorly executed. They should have had the brother, father, or mother notice the effect and then devise a way to use it. Instead, this teenage deaf girl suddenly becomes a genius in technology and turns it on, then uses the speaker system to amplify it. And this brings me to the ending. When an actor is in more than one movie, and you see them, and you think… she looks familiar… but from where. That’s a sign of a good actor. That means the character they played was more interesting then the person portraying them because you do not immediately connect those two characters. So I had the same moment with the Mom (Emily Blunt). I was like “I know her from somewhere…. but where….”. I decided not to look it up at first. But the last shot of the movie, is her with the shotgun, and in that second I thought…. “Live Die Repeat”. In those few seconds her entire Persona BROKE. She went from a scared mom protecting her children to, I’m a bad-ass and I’ve done this before….. other than those three small things the movie was amazing…. :)
